Columbarium Expansion Art Work

I choose to incorporate artwork in the form of murals from Japanese artist Haruko Maeda. Maeda has lived and worked in Austria since 2005. Her artwork combines the Shintoistic traditions from Japan with the Roman Catholic Faith. Her work serves as a bridge between the Western and Eastern ideas of existence, life and death. Below are her works which I have chosen to place within my building.

Heartbeat of the Death 8

Heartbeat of the Death 6

I choose the two above woks of art for my main entrance walls because they are bright and evoke a feeling of lightness. The incorporation of bones and flowers, similar to the actual boxes within the columbarium that hold the bones adorned with flowers appealed to me.

Heartbear of the Death 2

I choose to use this piece of art on the exterior wall of my library/museum space within my columbarium expansion.

Butterflies for Elisabeth

I choose to use the two above works for the interior walls of my contemplative space. The space is dark with a glowing light coming from the reflecting pool around its perimeter. I thought these pieces each possessed feelings of death and life, relating to the thoughts of those who would be using the space.
